<dc:description>In this essay, we draw on literature and research findings on museum education, bioculturality, and decoloniality, conducting a critical analysis of the marks of colonization on the trajectory of museums. We also discuss the challenges and possibilities of addressing the tensions between colonial heritage and a biocultural reinvention from within the communities present in this trajectory. We analyze the case of the Ecomuseum of the Amazon/PA/BR, a museum and educational space that values local knowledge and practices as a possibility to offer indications, however limited, of building other worlds in the face of globalized capitalism.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Faced with contemporary challenges, science communication has adopted dialogical and affective strategies to bring science and society closer together. In this scenario, theater stands out as an ally, expanding communication beyond the transmission of content. This research investigates the insertion and reception of humor in the play &quot; The Big Problem of the Infinite Band,&quot; from the Museu da Vida Fiocruz, which seeks to promote a positive experience with mathematics. Based on Bergson and Fo&#x27;s concepts of humor and Hall&#x27;s Encoding/Decoding model, the analysis highlights the use of comic mechanisms capable of entertaining and fostering identification and belonging to the mathematical universe.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Public Communication of Science (CPC) can be understood as a strategic dimension of university life. This study investigates how researchers from the Institute of Physics at the Federal University of Uberlândia, in Minas Gerais (Brazil), perceive and practice CPC, highlighting institutional tensions, institutional initiatives, and the role of university mechanisms. Based on interviews with nine professors and seven postgraduate students, results indicate a clear recognition of CPC’s social relevance. However, participation remains irregular and reactive, alongside a lack of awareness regarding existing institutional initiatives. We advocate for an institutional ecosystem that strengthens engagement and the social role of the university.

<dc:description>Addressing misconceptions about earthquakes is one of the main challenges in the public communication of seismology. The belief that animals can predict when an earthquake will occur is one of the most deeply rooted myths in society, not only in Mexico but worldwide. To address this issue, a workshop was conducted that included a playful demonstration of a seismograph and a hands-on recreational activity providing information about earthquakes and animals, as part of a science fair organized by the National School of Earth Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Based on this experience, participants’ prior beliefs and the learning achieved through the workshop were analyzed.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Providing access to reliable and accessible information in the face of novel or uncertain scenarios is one of the greatest challenges for public communication of science. This becomes especially sensitive in the field of health, where decisions can literally have life-or-death consequences. Encouraging the public to move beyond confirmation bias and question their beliefs in order to base their opinions on scientific consensus is a major challenge. This article analyzes the process of conceptualizing, designing, and testing recreational science workshops created to address issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, a disease that between March 2020 and August 2022 caused 590 million infections and 6.4 million deaths worldwide. The activities were tested with 211 students aged 8 to 12 in a primary school in Zacatecas, Mexico. Questionnaires were sent to all participants, and 117 responses were obtained. The results point to a greater understanding of and interest in topics related to the novel coronavirus, as well as contagion prevention, vaccines, and the problems associated with self-medication.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study examines the degree of institutionalization of Public Communication of Science (PCS) in Mexico based on a sample of 83 research centers belonging to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), and the Public Research Centers coordinated by the Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation (SECIHTI). Using a structured questionnaire grounded in the multilevel model proposed by Entradas and Bauer, the study identifies budgetary inequalities, the predominance of one-way activities, and partial progress in policies and professionalization. The findings place the Mexican case within a broader Latin American process of transition towards the consolidation of PCS as a strategic function of the scientific system.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The global science festival Pint of Science has been organized since 2013 and is characterized by being an event where the scientific community communicates its research in a pleasant language to a non-specialized public in a decontracted environment, such as bars. In 2025, it was organized from May 19th to May 21st in 251 cities from 27 countries. Trelew city (Chubut, Argentina) witnessed its first Pint of Science in 2025, being the world’s australmost city where this event was held. With the objective of having a demographic sample of the public that attended the event and their opinions, we designed a survey that was distributed among the audience. One hundred and twenty-seven people explicitly authorized to use their responses in a publication. The responses were analyzed, and the results were compared with other published events of Pint of Science (Brazil and Thailand). From the comparison, some common demographic characteristics emerge (e.g., gender proportions and mean age). However, we should be cautious given the historical, social, and economic differences among the audiences of the different events. The public of PoS Trelew 2025 qualified the event as good and excellent. </dc:description>

<dc:description>This article maps the use of the term “Environmental Communication” in academic articles and postgraduate research within the context of Brazilian scholarship. While the circulation of environmental discourses has grown in professional settings, academic development in the field has not kept pace. There has been progress in epistemological debates surrounding environmental journalism, but this remains limited and needs to be expanded to other subfields. Concurrently, forms of communication employed by activists, social movements, traditional communities, and Indigenous peoples - who advocate for alternative relationships with nature - can be observed. Although these groups may not explicitly adopt the term &#x27;environmental,&#x27; their communicative practices align with the principles of Latin American environmentalism.</dc:description>

<dc:description>In this article, we investigate the relationship between arts and sciences as presented in Brazilian theses and dissertations from 2018 to 2022, aiming to understand their contributions as current strategies for science communication. We conducted qualitative research using literature mapping, based on a search in the Theses and Dissertations Archive from the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education – CAPES. After analyzing 61 studies, we inferred their typologies and main ideas. The results point to six approach perspectives for using this relationship in science communication, demonstrating its potential to contribute to a viewpoint that deconstructs hegemonic ideas about science.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study evaluates how a Mathematics Festival influences students’ attitudes toward the
discipline in a secondary school in southern Chile. Using an adapted version of the Attitudes
Toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI), the research reveals a positive impact on students’
appreciation of mathematics. A novel finding was a motivational difference by gender, with
an increase among male students and a decrease among female students. The results
highlight the relevance of such festivals in strengthening positive perceptions of
mathematics and the need for inclusive approaches..</dc:description>

<dc:description>The present study establishes connections between science communication (SC) and social project management. The case of a SC event on gender equity in science with adolescents and female researchers is studied. Representative of a group of similar SC initiatives, the event is divided into six phases of a social project&#x27;s life cycle, each of which is analyzed according to good management practices, identifying points where failure to apply these practices led to missed opportunities. In conclusion, it is recommended that SC projects do not fail to record and document their processes.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This article examines the history of public visitation at the Prof. Mello Leitão Biology Museum (MBML) from 1949 to 2023, including an analysis of the objectives behind scheduled visits in 2022 and 2023. The methodology was based on bibliographic research, document analysis, and thematic categorization of visit purposes. Since its foundation, MBML has prioritized scientific research, but over the years, it has become an important space for education and culture. Its transition to federal management brought significant implications for public engagement. Among the main motivations for guided visits are: Biodiversity and Conservation (30%), History and Culture (26%), and Environmental Education (17%).</dc:description>

<dc:description>This article discusses the infodemic in Argentina and Brazil. Based on the sociology of social problems approach, it analyses the discourse and practices of 17 interviewees who are involved in raising public awareness and influencing political decision-makers regarding the effects of the infodemic. The results show that they condemn the politicisation of scientific information. In both countries, the interviewees have questioned the effectiveness of state regulation and platform self-regulation, emphasising the need to improve the media&#x27;s science reporting, invest in science literacy, and develop fact-checking strategies to prevent the spread of scientific misinformation</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study analyzes the coverage of Folha de S. Paulo and Gazeta do Povo regarding the actions of the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Using content analysis, we examined how the newspapers portrayed the CFM’s stance on treatment and vaccination. “Early treatment” was the most frequent topic (40%), and “politicians” were the most cited actors (28%). While 96% of the texts published by Gazeta defended the CFM, 98% of those published by Folha criticized the institution.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This article shares the results of a visitors study conducted with families at Modo Escape: Solo la ciencia podrá salvarte, the educational escape room located at the Espacio Ciencia hands-on center (Montevideo, Uruguay). To collect data for the research, six families&#x27; participation in the escape room was recorded using a GoPro camera placed on the head of one of the participants. The interactions and conversations that occurred among family members were subsequently analyzed. The results show that participants spent a significant amount of time engaged in interactive activities, primarily referring to manipulation of objects. It was observed that conversations about topics related to the activity facilitated various situations of collaborative work among participants and were essential for completing the tasks before the time limit expired. Regarding the conceptual content addressed through the activities, it was evident that participants were able to understand some scientific concepts beyond just playing and having fun. We hope that this study will be of interest to anyone interested in designing and implementing educational escape rooms with scientific content.</dc:description>

<dc:title>Dimensions of the Future: An Approach to Classifying and Communicating Technological Visions</dc:title>

      <dc:creator>Sifuentes Marín, Gerardo</dc:creator>

<dc:description>In recent decades, technological visions (TVs) have played a crucial role in shaping public expectations about the future. These projections, which seek to combine speculation with scientific rigor, generate narratives that both inform and shape society, while also guiding decision-making processes within transnational companies and governments [Baena, 2016]. In this essay, I propose a classification system to evaluate and analyze these visions, enabling a deeper understanding of their representations and objectives. The approach considers five interrelated qualities: Realization, Discourse, Mediality, Life Cycle, and Imaginary Magnitude. It is timely to reflect on the relevance of TVs within scientific communication in the Latin American context, where futuristic narratives often adopt an external and biased perspective towards diverse realities, limiting their local resonance. As a tool for disseminating scientific knowledge and technological advances, TVs may be useful for adapting such narratives to the specific needs and challenges of the region.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study maps and characterizes the presence of Brazilian Science and Technology Centers and Museums (CMCT) in the &quot;virtual world&quot;, seeking to understand how they fit in and relate to the public in these environments. The websites and social media profiles of 185 CMCTs, selected from the guide published by the Brazilian Association of Science and Technology Museums and Centers, were explored, identifying initiatives for virtualizing collections and practices. The result was that 39% of the institutions are present in virtual environments, but this occurs in an erratic, dispersed and outdated manner, especially with limited interactivity or dialogicity.</dc:description>

<dc:description>In this work we carry out a bibliographic review of open access academic production on communication and the COVID-19 pandemic (from March 2020 to October 2023) in Argentina and Mexico. The corpus (n=101) was compiled from digital libraries, while we used an original self-designed protocol to analyze it considering volume, topics studied and methodological approaches. The most studied topics were media consumption in Argentina and public perception in Mexico, while social media was underrepresented. The results, according to the methodological approach employed, indicate a lack of propositional studies that strengthen the social framework in the face of future health challenges, as well as a scarce use of hybrid methodologies (quali/quanti) and interdisciplinary perspectives to address new complex challenges.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The public&#x27;s understanding of science is fundamental in a world full of uncertainty, negationism and socio-environmental problems. It&#x27;s not just about understanding concepts, but also the Nature of Science (NoS). Science communication in the media plays a crucial role in this process, but there are few studies on scientific texts that investigate their potential in relation to the NoS and whether there are differences between texts by journalists and scientists. Here, I analyze which aspects of the NoS appear in texts from a widely-circulated Brazilian newspaper and conclude that there are no differences between the two types of text. Keywords: Science and media, Science journalism, Science and society.</dc:description>

<dc:description>UNESCO Global Geoparks are geographical areas with sites and landscapes of international geological importance, conceived for the conservation and sustainable use of geological heritage and as settings for sharing Earth Sciences’s knowledge. We chose four geosites of the Comarca Minera geopark in Hidalgo, Mexico, that are managed by the communities, to observe Social Appropriation of Knowledge strategies. We describe different practices and the participation of different actors in them. The more involved the communities and their knowledge are, the greater the social appropriation of knowledge and the possibilities of offering specialized tourism such as geotourism, with a territorial, comprehensive approach. It is observed that current tourism in the geopark is largely focused on the search for extreme and ephemeral experiences, without a deeper connection to the environment. Through co-created strategies for social appropriation of knowledge, this model can be reversed towards a geotourism vocation, more sustainable and consistent with the geopark dessignation.arque.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study presented how the exhibitions at Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden (JBCVC), Gran Canaria, Spain, contribute to the scientific literacy of its visitors from the perspective Non-Formal Education. The presence of scientific literacy indicators at the JBCVC is evaluated using the tool developed by Marandino et al. [2018], which provides four indicators (scientific, social interface, institutional, and interaction). The results reveal that the exhibitions focus on attributes associated with the scientific indicator, with a limited presence of institutional, social, and aesthetic/affective indicators, and some recommendations are made for the environmental education process at the JBCVC.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The “Trupe Naturalista” is a group of Brazilian science communicators that operates on the social network Twitter, creating content and interacting with the public. The present study aimed to investigate whether interaction with these communicators can alter the perception of followers about arthropods. To this end, followers answered an online questionnaire informing about their profile, interests, motivations, interactions, use of the platform and perceptions about these stigmatized animals. The results indicate that the contact with the science communicators was able to positively change the behavior of the respondents regarding arthropods, reducing their aversion, and increasing their interest in nature.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Through participatory activities, we aim to engage people with science, technology, and innovation in an active manner, fostering a higher level of involvement and interaction with others. This paper presents the design process of an activity based on the perspective of public participation and the game PlayDecide, addressing the socio-environmental issue of urban solid waste management. We believe it is important to share this process as a contribution to those who design educational experiences in informal science settings.</dc:description>

<dc:description> Limited representation in science has historically rendered the contributions of underrepresented groups invisible, perpetuating exclusion. However, stories of scientists who overcome these barriers emerge as powerful tools for transformation, challenging stereotypes and inspiring new generations. The visibility of diverse trajectories positively influences the aspirations of young people, especially women and minorities, fostering a more inclusive and innovative scientific community. Furthermore, effective science communication must reflect social diversity, combat misinformation, and promote greater societal engagement—crucial for strengthening public trust and achieving equitable scientific development.</dc:description>

<dc:description>In recent years, numerous initiatives have emerged in Argentina where both scientists and artists combine science and theatre, either as a form of art and/or public science communication. In order to understand the current state of this field, a research was conducted involving an exhaustive search, a survey, and interviews. The goal was to identify what actions are being carried out in our country and who, how, and why these practices, which could be termed scientific theatre, are being developed, as well as to explore their histories, interests, and perceptions regarding this practice</dc:description>

<dc:description>In this article, we share a creative and pedagogical process that brings the so-called &quot;science on stage&quot; to life, emerging at the intersection of theater and science. Through a theater methodology, we use elements of the clown genre to develop a formative process rich in bodily and emotional expression, integrating narratives around science and culminating in a stage proposal. The result is an educational experience where emotion and reflection emerge as the undisputed protagonists, promoting deeper learning and a more meaningful connection with the audience, and in turn, a connection between the audience and scientific themes.</dc:description>

<dc:description>In Argentine institutes and scientific research centers, efforts are rarely dedicated to public science communication (PSC), which weakens the connection with the society to which they belong. For this reason, in 2015, the Institute of Limnology “Dr. Raúl A. Ringuelet” (La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina) created its Extension and Communication Area, which has coordinated numerous activities at science fairs, schools, and neighborhoods. Through the implementation of a relational approach, adaptable to similar institutions, solid connections have been established with various sectors, and the internal revaluation and enhancement of PSC.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The study describes and analyzes the production of a health communication podcast based on the ‘Health Handbook of Persons Affected by Leprosy’, produced by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, in 2020. In a study that analyzed the perception of users treated at a specialized public outpatient clinic, it was observed that some of them were unable to read and interpret printed text. The perceived difficulties motivated the adaptation of the content and, thus, the Podhans podcast was created. With accessible and relaxed language, the 16 episodes explore useful topics about the daily lives of people with leprosy and the disease, created from listening to users and considering principles of public communication. Available online, it can be used in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) services and by social movements, expanding access to health information and communication about leprosy.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The article analyzes the series of reports Behind the Scenes of Science, produced by Jornal UFG in 2020, as an action to combat disinformation, spurred by attacks on a researcher during the covid-19 health emergency. In the content analysis of the series’ articles, it is possible to understand some of the values highlighted in the reports as a strategy of credibility of science and the university, as well as of the journalism. In this case, journalism serves as a filter of reality and strategy for defending institutions and science.

<dc:description>During the covid-19 pandemic in Brazil, it was observed that a great number of false messages circulated on social media. Most of these messages featured scientific and technological elements. This article analyzes how scientific and technological aspects were used in false messages about the pandemic. From the Latam Chequea Coronavírus databank, we have compiled 152 false messages that featured the inappropriate use of scientific knowledge. The results showed that false messages appropriated science and technology to usurp their social value in search of credibility. To achieve this, the fake news used verbal-visual resources, authorities and mixed true and false information</dc:description>

<dc:description>This qualitative, documentary research analyzed the profile of recipients of Productivity in Research (PQ) grants in Science Communication (DC) from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) in Brazil. Data were collected from calls between 2013 and 2021 and curricula from the Lattes platform. The results indicated that women are the majority among PQ grant holders in DC. Most of them hold PQ-E grants, are concentrated in the Southeast, and have diverse educational backgrounds. The field of DC does not follow the trend of the PQ system, revealing a gender parity situation with a slight female advantage. However, this does not imply a favorable position for female researchers due to prevailing gender prejudices.</dc:description>

<dc:description>We question, from the perspective of public communication, how the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Brazil) responded to COVID-19. The question, asked to communication professionals at the institution two years after the start of the pandemic, sought to identify challenges and elements of institutional learning and understand the possibilities and limits of communication in the context of disinfodemic and political crisis. Qualitative research of an exploratory nature carried out through semi-structured interviews and, alternatively, the use of documentary sources indicates that Fiocruz recognizes public communication (science and health) as a process under construction and a strategic and structuring factor for the full implementation of its Communication Policy.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This article investigates the role of media behavior in the adherence of Brazilians to the three main non-pharmacological measures (NPIs) endorsed by global health organizations against COVID-19: the use of face masks, social distancing, and frequent handwashing. Following the outbreak of a pandemic when vaccines are not yet available, the adoption of these behaviors may be the only effective measure against the threats of a new disease. Grounded in social cognitive theory, we examine the behavioral determinants of adherence to these measures in Brazil, a middle-income country marked by significant economic and informational inequalities. Brazil, one of the countries most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, was led by former President Jair Bolsonaro, who showed little regard for the use of face masks and encouraged large gatherings at political events. Our findings, based on an online survey administered to a sample of 2,771 individuals, indicate that media-related determinants such as knowledge about COVID-19, the use of social and traditional media, and belief in a conspiracy theory regarding the origin of the coronavirus play a significant role in explaining adherence to preventive measures. In contrast, other determinants such as political preferences, sociodemographic characteristics, and environmental factors play a secondary role.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The environmental dimension goes through different aspects linked to health, biodiversity, well-being and sustainability of human and non-human life. Although these are manifested in several regions of the world, Latin America has been particularly affected. In this context, science communication becomes even more necessary, but also challenging. It was this context that motivated us to make the call for this special issue of JCOM Latin America on the environment and science communication, which we present in this editorial.</dc:description>

<dc:description>In this article, we address the interdisciplinary problem of climate change, with emphasis on the interface between Science, Environment and Communication. We understand that climate crisis researchers are important to making their studies understandable to society and conveying information about the urgency of the issue. In 2021, we interviewed 15 researchers to understand how they perceive themselves as disseminators of their knowledge and understand communication actions to cope with the situation. The interpretative analysis was operationalized by thematic categories. The results point to a lack of scientific dissemination practices by researchers, who prefers to be mediated by communication professionals. The results also point to an instrumental understanding of the communication processes.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This study examines the regulations and modes of child participation in the co-production of radio and audiovisual media within the framework of a conservation project for the Vinaceous-breasted Amazon parrot, involving various local stakeholders. Drawing upon Cultural Studies and with a focus on participatory actions, audiovisual records of co-creation activities and their outputs were analyzed. Four main modes of child participation emerged: (1) contextualized, (2) symbolic, (3) technical-aesthetic, and (4) identity-related. This research represents a significant, albeit initial, step in systematizing a dialogue among the fields of participatory science communication research and practice, childhood studies, and biodiversity conservation.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Biodiversity and conservation are very popular terms that encompass different kinds of content, and addressing them in educational contexts is challenging. We assume the importance of promoting access to more complex definitions and content on these topics, contributing to the expansion of a reliable repertoire of terms and multifaceted ideas, as well as encouraging engagement with environmental issues. In this article, we discuss how these themes are represented in two immersive exhibitions in Botanical Gardens. To do so, we use Basil Bernstein’s Pedagogic Discourse model, with emphasis on the relationship between discourses from different areas of knowledge and/or forms of knowing (interdisciplinarity). It is considered that a higher degree of interdisciplinarity enhances more multifaceted and complex messages about biodiversity and conservation. The findings reveal that exhibition design plays an important role in expanding interdisciplinarity, and that the context in which the exhibitions are produced and presented also has a significant influence, contributing in different ways to providing access to the complexity of ideas surrounding these themes.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This article presents an analysis of activities at the Odilza Fernandes Bittar Environmental Education Center, through observation of a guided tour carried out with teachers in Campo Grande-MS, Brazil. This is a qualitative research based on the Anthropological Theory of Didactics. It highlights the integration of Science and Environmental Education knowledge into the school curriculum. The space is a valuable resource for addressing socio-environmental issues, contributing to scientific dissemination. However, it pointed out the need for planning actions with schools, due to the limited time on guided visits, which makes the approach difficult as pointed out by theoretical assumptions.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The present study mapped local media outlets in Michoacán, Mexico, prioritizing science and environmental topics. The work was conducted from February to July 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Twenty-two digital media outlets were identified that regularly address environmental and/or science approaches. A survey was conducted with communication and journalism professionals in Michoacán to understand perspectives on specialized journalism in the region. Addressing the challenges requires the reactivation of collaboration networks and medium- to long-term financing strategies to allow for the consolidation of existing initiatives.</dc:description>

<dc:description>In this article, we carry out a bibliometric analysis of studies carried out in Latin America and the Caribbean on environmental disinformation. Our corpus consisted of 51 articles, identified in the Scopus, Web of Science, Dimensions and Scielo databases. The results show continued growth in the production of scientific articles on misinformation and the environment after 2016, with climate change as a recurring theme. They also point to an increase in interest in the topic in the area of Communication &amp;amp; Information. It can also be seen that the field is in an early stage of development, however, it has an international and interdisciplinary character.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The world population ages coincidentally with a critical environmental situation due to climate change which threatens vulnerable populations, including many older adults. An exercise to communicate the risks of climate change is presented, based on detecting from a survey the knowledge and attitudes of this population on the subject. This survey was the basis from a workshop to promote self-care in the face of environmental risks faced by the elderly. The data obtained in the investigation, of a primarily quantitative nature, highlighted the importance of these groups in the production and dissemination of qualified information, allowing us to conclude that they contribute to subsidizing the construction of public policies, as well as to the training of teachers, researchers and professionals in the environmental field.</dc:description>
