Science communication ecosystem in Morelos

This article presents an exploratory study of the science communication ecosystem in the state of Morelos, Mexico. From a mixed methodological strategy, the main actors, means and practices through which scientific knowledge circulates in public space are identified. The analysis includes the review of newspapers, institutional media, as well as interviews with disseminators, journalists and communication managers. The findings make visible the characteristics of science communication, its limitations and the potential for articulation between different actors.

Communication and the pandemic: a review of open access academic production in Argentina and Mexico

In this work we carry out a bibliographic review of open access academic production on communication and the COVID-19 pandemic (from March 2020 to October 2023) in Argentina and Mexico. The corpus (n=101) was compiled from digital libraries, while we used an original self-designed protocol to analyze it considering volume, topics studied and methodological approaches. The most studied topics were media consumption in Argentina and public perception in Mexico, while social media was underrepresented. The results, according to the methodological approach employed, indicate a lack of propositional studies that strengthen the social framework in the face of future health challenges, as well as a scarce use of hybrid methodologies (quali/quanti) and interdisciplinary perspectives to address new complex challenges.

Behind the scenes of science: journalism as a strategy for combating disinformation

The article analyzes the series of reports Behind the Scenes of Science, produced by Jornal UFG in 2020, as an action to combat disinformation, spurred by attacks on a researcher during the covid-19 health emergency. In the content analysis of the series’ articles, it is possible to understand some of the values highlighted in the reports as a strategy of credibility of science and the university, as well as of the journalism. In this case, journalism serves as a filter of reality and strategy for defending institutions and science.

Environmental Education Activities in a non-formal space in the context of Science teacher training

This article presents an analysis of activities at the Odilza Fernandes Bittar Environmental Education Center, through observation of a guided tour carried out with teachers in Campo Grande-MS, Brazil. This is a qualitative research based on the Anthropological Theory of Didactics. It highlights the integration of Science and Environmental Education knowledge into the school curriculum. The space is a valuable resource for addressing socio-environmental issues, contributing to scientific dissemination. However, it pointed out the need for planning actions with schools, due to the limited time on guided visits, which makes the approach difficult as pointed out by theoretical assumptions.

Mapping disinformation about the environment in Latin America and the Caribbean: a bibliometric analysis of an incipient field of research

In this article, we carry out a bibliometric analysis of studies carried out in Latin America and the Caribbean on environmental disinformation. Our corpus consisted of 51 articles, identified in the Scopus, Web of Science, Dimensions and Scielo databases. The results show continued growth in the production of scientific articles on misinformation and the environment after 2016, with climate change as a recurring theme. They also point to an increase in interest in the topic in the area of Communication & Information. It can also be seen that the field is in an early stage of development, however, it has an international and interdisciplinary character.

Products of public communication of science and technology: the case of the National University of Misiones

This paper shares advances of an ongoing research that investigates the meanings in relation to the communication of science and technology (CPCyT) by researchers at the National University of Misiones. We are interested in reflecting on the central role of social communication in the production and communication of scientific and technological knowledge. Our study investigates the formats and media used by researchers to communicate the results of their productions. In this article, we will focus on identifying, describing and analysing proposed CPCyT products in projects at the mentioned University during 2018-2020.

Research on misinformation and science communication: a review of the Latin American literature

In this article, we aim to carry out a literature review of studies carried out in Latin America on misinformation and science communication, in particular academic articles on this theme. Our corpus consisted of 142 articles, identified in the databases Scopus, Web of Science, Dimensions and Scielo. The results show that Brazil is the main stage of these analyses and appears in 65.5% of the corpus. It points to a concentration of research published from 2020, which correlate with the Covid-19 pandemic, being this the most studied theme (69.0%). The articles address digital social network studies (35.2%) and media studies (33.1%). We discuss the need to strengthen research among Latin American countries as a way to understand the specific nature of the circulation of science misinformation in the region and structure better ways to address it.

Los grupos de ciencia recreativa en México han construido, en las últimas décadas, un importante movimiento de impulso a la comunicación pública de la ciencia. Sus actividades involucran a los participantes, de forma física, intelectual y emocional, en la construcción de experiencias científicas significativas. La colaboración entre grupos mostró la necesidad de un marco conceptual común para esta comunidad emergente. Para construirlo se articularon elementos teóricos con la experiencia de los grupos de Recreación en Cadena, la Red Mexicana de Ciencia Recreativa. El presente artículo expone los conceptos fundamentales de esta especialidad, a la par de la forma en que se construyeron.

Comunicación y apropiación de las ciencias desde la universidad. El Caso de la Universidad Nacional de Entre Ríos

Este artículo presenta los resultados de dos investigaciones sobre la comunicación y apropiación social de las ciencias en la Universidad Nacional de Entre Ríos (UNER, Argentina). Se exponen las prácticas ligadas a la problemática desde un modelo de análisis que articula: 1) la política institucional; 2) las percepciones y actitudes de sus agentes. Contemplando, las funciones de (a) Investigación y (b) Extensión. Las conclusiones permiten establecer el panorama de las prácticas de circulación de las ciencias en la UNER, generar recomendaciones para fortalecer las acciones en esa dirección y proponer un modelo para abordar el tema en otras universidades.

Discursos y prácticas sobre comunicación de las ciencias en la Universidad Nacional de Entre Ríos (UNER)

En el artículo se analizan las prácticas y discursos sobre comunicación de las ciencias de docentes-investigadores de una universidad pública argentina (UNER). Mediante un modelo teórico y metodológico elaborado a tal fin, el estudio abordó diversos tipos de acciones (difusión académica, propuestas de vinculación curricular, transferencia y otras) desarrolladas por los agentes. Los resultados muestran el impacto en los habitus profesionales y socio-organizativos de ciertos cambios en el modo de comprender los procesos de producción y circulación del conocimiento científico — y, en general, las relaciones entre ciencia y sociedad — que en la actualidad atraviesan las instituciones académicas.
